BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 14

posted June 2nd, 2009 by Kit

Are you kidding me?? It’s on. Yes, that’s right, the event is on. After sitting on our backsides for the last six days or so, Jordy will finally have his first heat. Hietor Alves has been surfing well so it’s going to be a tough one , especially considering the small conditions that are favoring the goofy’s.

Here is Jordy’s pre heat warmup with Keanu Asing. Look like he’s nervous?

In the end, Jordy got the waves and moved onto the next round, disposing of Heitor with some good backside tube riding and solid turns. He faces Adriano De Souza in Round 4. If all goes well, he will be into the quarters. Could be finals tomorrow….giddy up.

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 13

Hate to say it, but we woke to the same thing this morning- very small surf and no event. Me, Snips (Mike Parsons) and Dino had a surf at No Pass which was clean and 4 ft. This spot would be great as a backup because it has good whackable lips and tubes as well. Our host Peva and his family have been nothing short of incredible and they really know how to make you feel like part of the family.

With surf small and non-contestable, we decided to head to the east coast where we visited some awesome places and homes that are only accesible by boat. No kidding, kids take a boat to school and parents to work…no road there baby! We visited a crazy cave that, legend has it, used to be owned by two lizards that one day were killed by a tribesman so he could house the girl he loved who was from another tribe.

Let’s hope the contest is on tomorrow because we’re running out of time…

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 12

Ground hog day. Smallest day of the trip and we are onto our 100th movie. Had a little surf at small pass and it lived up to its name.

One thing you never get tired of here in Tahiti is the beautiful sunsets. Today’s sunset was as good as it gets.

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 11

No event. Fun surf at No Pass with Jordy, Keanu, Snips and Dino. Man, it’s been a laugh a minute with all of us sharing some funny ass stories of the good old (and new) days on tour. It would make for a funny reality show here at Peva’s, that’s for sure.

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 10

Contest on. Luck is a huge factor today with wind and swell not being the best. There have been some big name casualties, namely Michel, who have already suffered at the hands of mother nature. Six heats of Round 2 down and Jordy is back on as soon as the event resumes.

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 9

No contest today; mother nature is really starting to mess with our minds. Sun eventually came out and we headed up the Valley with Peva, who just so happens to own 600 acres of the primest land here in Tahiti. We spent a  few hours hiking to some private ponds where we took a dip before hiking on to some more. You could hike for days in this lush, tropical valley and find some of the most stunning spots to hunker down and chill in. Here are the boys enjoying the break in the surf with some waterfall tube time and all around fun.

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 8

Another down day with winds blowing onshore and swell not up to scratch.

In this photo Any Rigg from Red Bull (Jordy’s sponsor) makes sure Jordy is doing things right . Here you can see him working on his rig as physical fitness is essential to the demands of tour life; lots of road traveling and surfing the best, but sometimes gnarliest ,waves in the world.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow, Chopu is ready to play.

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 7

posted June 2nd, 2009 by Kit

Well, it felt like the perfect storm hit us with 60 mph winds around 3am this morning. We woke up and the red bull ski was broken from its mooring and underneath our dock. We got lucky with pretty minimal damage, and with a few minor adjustments between rain squalls, we were ready to roll again.

Here is a shot of Keanu hard at it.

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 6

posted June 2nd, 2009 by Kit

Well it’s game on today as Round 1 of the competition begins in some very decent surf at Chopu. Surf ranging in the 3-5 ft range and very clean; there are going to be some great rides for sure.

Michel Bourez will be in the first heat tomorrow, if the event runs, and as a local he is a undoubtedly a favorite in the competition. However, there are plenty of other Chopu experts competing and they are out to win. Go Spartan!

Jordy is heading directly into Round 2 thanks to his great start in 2009 and his current position as #3 in the rankings. With the new event format in play it’s cut throat all the way to the finals. As I write from our ocean view location, Jordy and Keanu are getting shacked for the late.

Could it get any better?

BILLABONG PRO TAHITI: Day 5

Day before the event and the waves were tiny but still had some fun ones. Keanu went and did a shoot with his sponsor, Billabong, and Jordy just chilled because his foot was still a little sore from banging the reef.
